HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone from Fulham Brass Band! After a positive year with a lot of changes, we are now working hard towards our next outing in 2 weeks.. The Butlins Mineworkers Open Brass Band Festival 2013! This year the contest date will be Saturday 19th January in the glamorous Northern holiday spot of Skegness and we will once again be competing against bands from all over the country in the Second Section. After a good effort last year (10th out of 19th) with the ‘interesting’ Frogs of Aristophanes and a fun weekend, we were looking forward to a slightly more upbeat and less dreary piece… this year the chosen work is In Memoriam by Arthur Sullivan arranged by Neville Buxton. Originally written for Orchestra it premiered in 1866 in memory of Sullivan’s father, who died just before he began composing it. The piece has a dark and slow texture and according to Wiki, the piece enjoyed considerable popularity in the composer’s own lifetime, but it is rarely heard today. This will soon be changed when c.20 bands hit Skegness with their own interpretations and the large audience that we are likely to have are no doubt in for a treat.
Despite several different versions being distributed to the bands Fulham are looking to improve on last year’s result. We have been working on the piece throughout November and December and have an intense rehearsal schedule over the next 2 weeks. The band would like to thank conducting brothers John Ward (of 2013 London and Southern Counties Second Section winners and recently promoted Thundersley Brass Band) and Richard Ward (of 2013 London and Southern Counties Champion Section winners Zone One) for putting us through our paces at some of the rehearsals and under the baton of Rob Richardson we look forward to seeing all our friends and supporters in Skegness! And if you can’t go then we do hope to come home with a worthy result and a good time had by all… Come on Team Fulham!
